Year 6 visit to Bangor Museum

7th Feb 2019

Over the past few weeks, all the Year 6 classes have visited Bangor Museum as part of our Vikings topic. The children (and a few teachers!) had the opportunity to step inside a Viking longhouse and learn about Viking life as well as trying on costumes, some as slaves, some as Viking warriors!

All the pupils came away with a Viking brooch which they made out of clay. These were subsequently painted back in school in metallic colours.

It was fascinating to find out about the Vikings' influences in Northern Ireland. So many Viking names still exist on a map of N.I. Did you know that Strangford comes from the Old Norse meaning 'strong sea inlet' ? And Vikings didn't have horns on their helmets!!

What a wonderful way to bring the vicious Vikings to life for our Year 6 pupils!
